Previous to his dreamville days, J.I.D had ambitions of becoming a professional football player. i beseech you to listen to these three songs if nothing else, they are truly exceptional. cole-produced “ LAUDER” and 6lack-assisted “ 8701” as very close seconds. after countless listens of the album, i have concluded that my favorite song from “ the never story” is “ hereditary,” with j. his raps only remind me of one current rapper due to his sonic manner, and that rapper is kendrick lamar (see “ kendrick’s ‘DAMN.’ is great, but i can’t stop listening to J.I.D’s ‘the never story“). song after song was a further deliverance of musical genius and idiosyncratic style that i had never quite heard before. there was no way i was about to fall asleep this time.Īs the album progressed, i could not believe my ears. after precisely one minute and fifteen seconds of this, my headphones went silent for an instant, followed by a sharp snare kick of a drum followed by straight revealing bars on the second song of the album, “ general.” at that very moment my closed eyes burst open, and i was instantly mesmerized by the unique voice that was then, and also is currently permeating throughout my ears. although when i followed this routine for “ the never story,” something different happenedĪs i pressed play on the introductory song, titled “ doo wop,” i heard the subtle voice of a man (who i later discovered was not j.i.d) along with a minimalistic beat behind the words “ everyone’s a star…” slightly increasing in intensity.
cole himself tweeted about his upcoming tour in about june of last year, on which J.I.D was accompanying him, that i finally got around to listening to “ the never story.” when i usually listen to albums for the first time, i do so later at night before i go to bed, followed by an additional listen the next day to pick up on songs and/or lines that i may have missed falling in and out of sleep the night before. finally, on march 10, 2017, J.I.D’s debut album dropped, titled “ the never story.” and once again, you guessed it, i did not listen. a few days later, the second single released, titled “ D/vision.” i still did not listen. a few days after J.I.D’s signing was announced on february 20, 2017, the first single off of his upcoming album was released, titled “ NEVER.” i did not listen to it. The tweet (embedded below) was one of the many tweets that catch my eye for a few seconds, i tell myself i’m going to look into further, and then forget to take action upon. bas, cozz, omen, lute, ari lennox, and earthgang, are all signed to dreamville, and many of them will be introduced in future blog posts. the label currently has six artists signed, excluding j. dreamville is a record label founded by rap legend j. The first time that i heard of atlanta rapper J.I.D, it was from a tweet that the twitter account for dreamville posted.
